Rospotrebnadzor Scientists Have Developed an Import-Substituting Dry Culture Medium for Microbiological Monitoring

15 January 2021

Rospotrebnadzor (Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing) scientists have developed a technology for the production of a dry culture medium for primary inoculation during microbiological research – blood agar, which has shown high efficiency in clinical trials. The culture medium was registered as a medical device in November 2020 and is already being produced in industrial volumes at the institutes of Rospotrebnadzor. Previously, there was no dry production of this medium in Russia.

Equipping microbiological laboratories with standard high-quality media will increase the share of import-substituting dry media in domestic clinical microbiology and increase the efficiency of microbiological monitoring for infections associated with the provision of medical care in the overall complex of ongoing research.

Isolation of pure cultures of microorganisms and their identification is a key step in microbiological monitoring. The results depend on the quality of the culture media used both for the primary inoculation of biological material and for the identification and determination of antibiotic susceptibility, the choice of which is based on existing standards.

The use of blood agar as a growth medium for primary inoculation is a general requirement of all microbiological laboratory equipment standards. Most countries use the commercial Columbia Agar medium as a basis for its preparation.

The intensive development and widespread use of high-tech invasive methods of diagnosis and treatment leads to the emergence of new risks, determines the need for continuous improvement of technologies, methods and means of prevention, surveillance and control systems.

The development of a pilot project to ensure the epidemiological safety of medical care is being carried out by Rospotrebnadzor as part of an order from the Government of the Russian Federation.

Particular attention in the framework of the project is paid to the development of microbiological monitoring for infections associated with the provision of medical care, which is a complex and dynamic observation of pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms isolated from patients, personnel and objects of the hospital environment of a medical organization, their properties and circulation characteristics.
